Tlhokaina is a Setswana novel set on an unnamed town beset by recurrent spells of ominous weather. It is a gloomy, heart-rending story of an unnamed, orphaned boy who has a difficult, abusive upbringing. While dealing with crime and its consequences, it is a story which fuses courage and loyalty to produce success. Importantly, it is a story that concerns the clash of good and bad, and reveals to the reader the ills of traditional ‘healership’ gone wrong. Sprinkled with laughter here and there, in Tlhokaina the reader will come face to face with the pain of death, the joy of birth, the devastation of loss, and merciless witchcraft. Simply, Tlhokaina is tragedy.
